As a new year begins, many people have probably resolved to spend less time on their phones. I fully support this idea and find phone addiction to be a legitimate modern concern. My first thought in helping couples have better communication is not to tell them to spend more time on their phones, especially when together. That said, the Gottman Institute offers a free app designed to help couples with relationship issues or opportunities.
As a Gottman method practitioner, I believe in the Gottman tools. I believe in them even more when they are free (although sometimes paid apps are well worth it). The Gottman’s offer a free app called “Gottman Card Decks.” This app can downloaded from the play store to your phone. This app offers help with many tools taught as part of Gottman couples therapy. Features include love maps (knowing each others world, open-ended questions, rituals of connection, opportunities, sex questions, date questions, giving appreciation, and more. This is a great free app to complement marriage or couples therapy. Tools are even broken out into categories. For example, you can play a game with your partner to answer sex questions or challenges that range from what they call “mild” to the “hot” category.
